WHO WE ARE
About Me
Hello! I'm SoEun Park, a senior studying Government and Sociology, and a secondary in Ethnicity, Migration, and Rights (EMR). Ballet has been a passion of mine since I was six years old in Korea, ignited by my first experience watching Giselle. After moving to Michigan, I continued my ballet journey, performing on various stages and competing at numerous competitions. I’ve been fortunate to train at Valentina's School of Ballet, a place that has cultivated countless friendships and cherished memories.
However, my love for ballet comes with an awareness of the challenges present within the dance community, particularly concerning the lack of diversity. I have often found myself among the few dancers of color in classes and competitions. Despite my dedication and hard work, my experiences reflect the broader issues of microaggressions, bias in judging, and the significant lack of diversity in ballet.
The Diversity Challenge in Ballet
Ballet, a beautiful art form, is still grappling with a significant diversity problem. The majority of dancers in high-profile competitions and companies do not reflect the diversity of society, with lasting implications for aspiring dancers from various backgrounds. The cycle of racial inequality creates disparities in opportunities, making it increasingly difficult for talented dancers from underrepresented communities to break into the ballet world.
Many talented children are unable to access ballet training due to financial constraints. While some families can send their children to ballet schools, others without this privilege are left behind, perpetuating cycles of inequality across generations. This realization not only deepened my appreciation for my own opportunities but also fueled my desire for change and opportunities to make a difference.
Introducing Stairway for Ballet
In response to these challenges, I founded Stairway for Ballet. Our mission is to increase access to ballet and dismantle stereotypes within the ballet community. We advocate for equality and offer a free online ballet program for children ages 5-10, especially those who may not have the financial means to pursue ballet.
We host summer programs and intensives annually, bringing ballet to underserved communities. Additionally, our monthly podcasts, available on platforms like Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and more, feature real stories and interviews with professional dancers and students discussing their experiences with racism in ballet and strategies for creating meaningful change.
We also encourage engagement through petitions on MoveOn and highlight important resources on YouTube, directing revenue to organizations working against equal access to this art form.
Join Us in Our Mission
Stairway for Ballet is more than just a program; it is a movement. We are a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, established in 2020, guided by the belief that everyone deserves the opportunity for creative connection and self-expression.
Together, we can inspire change and build a more inclusive ballet community.
